A Beginner’s Guide to Home Projects

The process of building or renovating a home can be a great experience if you start with the right outlook and steps to successfully create the image you have in mind. With a handful of tips and tricks, your dream home can be realized.

  1. Realistic Measurement: At the start of your renovation process, you are going to be thrilled about the look of your future space. With the variety of ideas and notions running through your mind, you must remain realistic. Look at the area you have to work with and make a list of the must-haves you want. Once you have a list completed, an efficient project is to cut out paper in the size and shapes of each item you are purchasing or keeping. As you rearrange each piece of paper around your space, you can see firsthand how furniture, tables and open spaces would fit into and fill the renovated area. You could also do this for walls if you are considering replacement windows, paintings or mirrors.

  2. Organization: Whether it is the people you will be working with, your time frame, maintenance or what your space is going to look like, you have to be organized. Keep a folder with tabs for each step of your renovation. This way you are able to keep all receipts organized for later reference, for your taxes, as well as any to-do lists. There are also apps available to keep your thoughts organized, such as Homezada or Adornably. Yes, there’s an app for that.

  3. Cleanliness: Keep the clutter of renovation to a minimum by constantly staying on top of cleaning. Get wall cleaners, floor covers or any extra paint you may need for touch ups along the way. Throughout your renovation, focus on cleaning replacement windows, doors and cover furniture to keep your room looking brand new. At the completion of your project, you will be happy with a clean space that has been maintained during the entire process. Instead of mopping and dusting, you will be basking in your new space immediately.

  4. Budget: Your budget is the largest aspect of renovation. To remain on track, research continually to find the best deals. Although you want to save money, you must research, read reviews or get a reference from a friend you trust to be sure the deal is worth the cash in your pocket. It would be tough to spend the entirety of your budget on a job that isn’t done right. Your money plan also comes into play when you are pondering big purchases. Items like replacement windows may cost more up front. You may have to pick and decide between two big items, or sacrifice multiple smaller details. Each move you make is important; the pieces you pick will make a statement in your space for years to come. Whatever your budget is, you must be prepared for a thorough decision making process.
